Questions for the Director?  Lea Dunbar, [email protected]

This is a story about Eugene Jerome and his family, fighting the hard times and sometimes each other, with laughter, tears and love. It is 1937 in Brooklyn during the time of the Depression. The teenage Eugene lives in Brighton Beach with his family. He is witty, perceptive, obsessed with sex and forever fantasizing about being a pitcher for the New York Yankees. Eugene is the audience’s guide through his “memoirs”. He takes us through a series of funny observations and insights that show his family meeting life’s challenges with pride, spirit and a marvelous sense of humour. But as World War looms ever closer, Eugene sees his own innocence slipping away as the first important era of his life ends and a new one begins.

At the auditions we will be looking for actors for the following roles:

Eugene Jerome:
“I love tense moments! Especially when I’m not the one they’re all tense about.”

Eugene is a precocious 15-year old with lots of imagination who dreams of playing major league baseball and becoming a writer.

  Stanley Jerome:

If you ever write a story about me, call me Hank. I always liked the name Hank.”

Stanley is Eugene’s 18-year-old brother who passes on his wisdom to Eugene and works to help support the family.

Kate Jerome:
“Stay on your own side of the street. That’s what they have gutters for.”

Kate Jerome is Eugene’s mother who plays the strong Jewish matriarch role of taking care of everyone because it’s her family duty.

Jack Jerome:
“What God gives us to deal with, we deal with.”

Jack is Eugene’s sensible father who works tirelessly to make sure his family and his sister-in-law’s family is provided for.

Blanche Morton
Sure, it hurts, but if you love someone, you forgive them.”

Blanche is Kate’s younger, widowed sister who moved in with the Jeromes’ when she couldn’t financially support her own family alone

  Laurie Morton
I’m staring into space. I can’t help it if your body interferes.”

Laurie is Blanche’s 13-year-old daughter who is treated delicately due to a heart condition.

Nora Morton
“I’m going to be in a Broadway show!”

Nora is Blanche’s vivacious 16-year-old daughter who dreams of becoming a professional dancer.

Director’s Note:

This play is primarily about family and what I will be looking at in rehearsals is the right grouping of actors. No previous experience is necessary but the rehearsal process will be rigorous, with rehearsals once or twice a week. Rehearsal will be planned according to cast availability.
