For the first play reading session in 2020 we have chosen The Lion and the Jewel by the Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka.
A selection of one-acts for FEATS, the Festival of European Anglophone Theatrical Societies, will also be read. We will not necessarily make a final decision but seek for the feedback of those attending the play reading.
The Lion and the Jewel by Wole Soyinka
“The Lion and the Jewel is one of the best-known plays by Africa’s major dramatist Wole Soyinka. It is set in the Yoruba village of Ilunjile. The main characters are Sidi (the Jewel), “a true village belle” and Baroka (the Lion), the crafty and powerful Bale of the village, Lankule, the young teacher, influenced by Western ways, and Sadiku, the oldest of Baroka’s wives. How the Lion hunts the Jewel is the theme of this ribald comedy.” (Oxford University Press)
